Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year distance learning certificate program in theological education through Sewanee College. It is based upon small-group study and practice. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 80,000 participants in discovering and nurturing their call to Christian service. EfM helps the faithful encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together.

At St Francis, the study group is mentored by Virginia Meneely, who has extensive training in EfM. However, she is a facilitator versus a formal teacher. The program is set up so that all share their learning, no matter what year they are studying. Year One studies The Hebrew Bible, Year Two: The New Testament, Year Three: Church History, and Year Four: Theology, Ethics, and Interfaith Encounter. Throughout this process participants grow in the ability to do Theological Reflection and explore their own calling to lay ministry through Spiritual Autobiography. The group welcomes anyone from throughout our Capitol Deanery.

“The process of working together and developing theological reflections is an amazing and spiritually charged experience. What develops from our work together is greater than any one of us!!! I expected to learn a lot from these classes, but I didn’t realize how much it would help me with discerning not what I believe, but how I believe, as well as who I believe. I love this class and the people in it.”
